Artistory

8 May – 12 July 2018

An art and feasting collaboration that sought to celebrate the stories of those who live and work in Shieldfield and question the roles of host and guest.

Throughout Artistory we hosted events which invited you to cook, eat and explore the stories of Shieldfield. Our growing exhibition and visual collection of feasting and eating told Shieldfield and Newcastle’s stories through recipes and food, as well as exploring the roles of guest and host. Documentation of events was added to the exhibition as we feasted our way through the project.

EXHIBITION |Tuesday 8 May – Thursday 12 July | Tue – Fri 11am – 4pm; Sat 23, 30 June and 7 July 1pm – 4pm; Sun 24 June 1pm – 4pm

Our exhibition was the plate on which Artistory was presented; through documentation of the events. The exhibition was continually added to, like brandy to a fruit cake, as we feasted our way through the project. So if you missed an event you could come and experience it through archive, photograph, film and collected materials.

DOUBLE JAM | Tuesday 8 May, 6.30 – 8.30pm

A free evening of communal jam making, label making and musical jamming. A simple savoury supper was served to help keep us jamming. People brought their hands ready to make jam and their voices ready to sing. Jammy!

THE LATE SHOWS |Friday 18 May, 7pm – 11pm

Visitors recreated their favourite family meal on a table mat using printing and drawing techniques, including printing with foods! Most visitors then let it become part of our growing exhibition and visual collection of feasting and eating within the community. Their was a family recipe swap, opportunity to view the exhibition and to see what had been cooking in Shieldfield. And there were plenty of cream teas to enjoy!

‘WE KNEAD A BUTTER ROLL MODEL’: BREAD WORKSHOPS | Wednesday 30 May, 10am – 1pm

BRING AND SHARE DINNER |Friday 29 June, 6 – 9pm

A free celebration of the recipes and stories that we had shared together. We invited each guest to contribute their favourite dish of food, they could even use their favourite recipe, to be shared together. Across the course of the dinner, there was also opportunity to contribute their recipes, stories and memories associated with the particular foods they had brought to a collaboratively created bunting. This event was facilitated by Lauren Healey.
