Shieling Design Fest

SHIELING DESIGN FEST
Saturday 22nd June, 10:30am-2pm (drop in)
Shieldfield Art Works (formerly Holy Biscuit)

You are invited to a mini festival to contribute to the design of a new community building and garden space, called ‘Shieling’, at Shieldfield Art Works.

Over the last few months, the community group Dwellbeing has been gathering to talk about what community spaces are already existing in Shieldfield, whether a new community space is needed and, if so, what would happen there. We want to bring more voices into this project and work together with an architect to design ‘Shieling’. This design fest will be the first stage in this process.

What is Shieling?
Shieldfield was once a ‘shieling ground’ – common land where people would graze their cattle and sheep in the summer months. The word ‘shieling’ refers to the huts or bothies where they would live during this period and were made out of the materials found directly in the landscape, such as heather, earth and stones. ’Shieling’ is a symbol for reclaiming land in Shieldfield and bringing it back into community use. Shieling will by designed by the community with an architect and will be ecologically sustainable, using reclaimed and locally sourced materials.

Shieling will have three main functions:
–A learning and activist space – for building knowledge and planning future action about the issues that affect our neighbourhood;
–A space for gathering – for children and young people, arts activities, community meals and faith activities;
–A green space – for growing food and gardening, relaxing and summer parties.

Shieling Design Fest invites you to help begin to make Shieling a reality and have your say in how it might look and operate. There will be fun workshops for young and old, including materials, making and design activities. The event is free and includes refreshments and a picnic lunch.
